Research Illustrated

This was an illustration designed for the cover of The ASHA Leader. I used a gear to represent the grinding process of research, which acts as sort of a funnel (or wormhole) into which hectically flows a stream of jumbled words reflecting the complex orchestration of information, processes and protocol necessary in developing a successful research project. Messy brushstrokes in layers of red, orange and white reinforce this intense, tactile, directed — yet uncertain — energy flowing into the research process. This is all balanced by the orderly output stream of words emitting from the backside of the gear, representing the clarity, direction and analytical phase that emerges as the research process nears completion. This is reinforced with a slightly blue cast, yielding a more calming and structured feeling to compliment this idea of progression.
